How to Solve a BEDMAS Equation

How to Solve a BEDMAS Equation

Chelsea

October 14, 2011

Have you ever had a multi-step problem with brackets, exponents, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction and could NEVER find the right way to find the answer?   That’s what BEDMAS is for.

BEDMAS stand s for Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction.  It shows the proper order to solve a multi-step problem.  If (9+2)×7+ -4×5÷2 was your question you would find the sum of the two numbers in the brackets.  Now your question looks like this; 11×7+ -4×5÷2.  So you would write down 11×7, then find the answer to  which is 9.  The new question is 11×7+9-4×5÷2.  Now we have done B and E, so now we move on to division or multiplication; whichever comes first.

Now find the product of 11×7=77 and write 77+9-4×5÷2.  After that find the product of 4×5, which equals 20.  Your new question is now 77 +9-20÷2.   To finish the division and multiplication steps find the quotient of 20÷2=10 and now the question is 77+9-10.  For addition and subtraction you answer whatever operation comes first in the question, so find the sum of 77+9=86 then take 10 away from 86 and that is your answer; 76.

Now when you have a problem with lots of operations you’ll know hw to solve it.  BEDMAS is something you will use throughout your high school career and the rest of your life, and now you know how to use it.

Christina Taylor Green

Earlier I asked you what I should do my biography on.  I decided on Christina Taylor Green.

Christina Taylor Green

September 23, 2011

Chelsea

On September 11 2001 a young girl was born.  For all we know she could have been the best veterinarian in America or even the greatest politician her country has ever seen.  But we’ll never know.  Christina Taylor Green, daughter of John and Roxanna Green was born on the worst day in American history; September 11 2001 more commonly known as 9/11.

As a young girl Christina enjoyed ballet dancing and baseball; as her grandfather, Dallas Green was manager of the Philadelphia Phillies.  She was also very involved in politics.  Christina had been recently elected Student Council President.  “The reason for her involvement in politics was partly because of her date of birth,” stated her mother.

Christina was all about helping people and had hopes to become a veterinarian when she grew up but she also wanted to help make her country a better place to live.  Her plan to do this was by making sure everyone’s ideas were listened to.  She was already on her way to making these changes by being elected as Mesa Verde Elementary School’s Student Council President.  Being born into a strong loving baseball family she was the only girl on the Canyon Del Oro Pirates baseball team.  At the age of nine she was already very involved.

On January 8 2011 Christina was asked by a neighbor to accompany her at Gabrielle Giffords political event at the local supermarket in Tucson where everything went wrong.  Christina had planned to ask the Congress women questions on how to make her country a better place.  A little way through the event the shooting began.  Jared Lee Loughner had planned to assassinate Giffords but instead shot 20 people, killing 5 at the scene as nine year old Christina was rushed to hospital after a shot in the chest where she later died.

Christina’s organs were donated saving a young Boston girl’s life and her corneas were donated to two other children saving their eyesight.  Christina’s story was one of the stories featured in the book ‘Faces of Hope’ with pictures of children of 50 states born on 9/11.  Even though Christina was only a young girl she had dreams to make a big change.  I think we can all take a lesson from Christina; no matter how young you are you can always make a difference in the world.
