Challenge 6

Activity 1: For this challenge we are looking at research skills, attribution, links and creativity in how you have presented the work. For the topic you have chosen you might want to create two or three posts rather than one very long one.In your post, include links to where you researched and some images with attribution. You might also want to include a poll or survey, a collage of images, a slideshow you have created.

 Activity 1-

The topic I chose was racism.  The reason I chose this topic is because I think people should accept people for the way they are and I think it’s wrong to judge people for what they believe in or what they look like.  When I was researching these are some of the links I found.

This was a very good link that helped me understand what racism is and where lots of this issue is taking place.

This link was helpful because it talked about the history of racism where I live.

What is Racism?

Racism is the belief that one race is superior over another.  Racism has been existent throughout all of history and sadly is still an issue.  All over the world racism is problematic; some places more than others.

 Where is Racism?

Racism is an issue in almost every country.  Some examples from the first website above are …

  1. in Europe
  2. Racism in Australia
  3. Racism in Africa
  4. Racism in the Middle East
  5. Racism in Asia
  6. Racism in North America
  7. The Lure of Adolph Hitler and neo-Nazism
  8. Racism against Gypsies
  9. Immigration
  10. The Internet and Racism
  11. Globalization and Racism
  12. UN’s World Conference on Racism, 2001

 Why does this happen?

Racism would not be an issue if everyone accepted people for who they are instead of trying to change them.  I do not understand why some people think everyone needs to be like them and why some people think they are superior to others but that is why this is still an issue in the world.

Activity 4 – Create your own images and add to a post of your choice- Other options for creating your own images include:

  1. Image Generators such as ImageGenerator.org
  2. Comic Generators like MakeBeliefsComix.com,  kerpoof, ToonDoo
  3. Photo Editors like Befunky, fd’s Flickr Tools
  4. Tag Cloud Creators such as Wordle
  5. Graph Creators including GraphJam and Crappy Graphs

Mixing up your images using these types of tools can really spice up your posts! Leave a comment on this post, if you or your class can recommend some other image sites to add to this list.

Activity 5 – Zoom out from an image-We tried this activity in the challenge in September 2010. Choose a picture, and have your readers zoom out, so to speak, by leaving comments. So maybe something simple, like a pillow, and the first commenter describes something bigger around the pillow (like a couch) and the next commenter would write about the room it was in, and the next could zoom out the window and do the house, etc.  If doing this activity, include the word ‘zoom’ in your title so I can find it easily. Remember to give attribution. Most important here is to read previous comments, so you can add to the story.

 Activity 4-

Wordle: Untitled This is my personalized image for activity 4.  I costomized my wordle using this link from Mrs. W blog.

Activity 5-

As a comment tell me the story of this apple by zooming out of the image.

Challenge 4

Activity 3. After school activities- Students around the world do a variety of different activities after school. Some might relate to school work such as band, cheerleading, sports teams. But what are some of the things you most enjoy doing once you are let out of school for the day. Write about this in a post but remember to be internet safe and not mention what time and place you do these activities. Class blogs might like to include a poll or survey about your students’ after school activities.

Activity 4. If I could learn anything ……If there were one thing in life you could learn to do, what would it be? How are you going about achieving this dream?

Activity 5. Write a story beginning …….like a choose your own adventureAs other students visit your blog, they can add to the story in the comment

Activity 6. Visit other blogs in the challenge

How does the life of students in different countries differ from your life? Leave some questions on their blogs and make sure you have their blog on your links in your sidebar, so you can go back to visit and find out the answers to your questions.

Activity 3- I don’t do many after school activities but I do play on some of my school’s sports teams.  Right now I am on the volleyball team.  In January and February I usually play on the Sr. girls basketball team and I try out for free throw.  In May I also tryout for the badminton team and in June, July and August I play softball.  My favourite after school activities are volleyball, basketball and in the summer my favourite thing to do is play softball.  These are some of the after school activities I do; what activities do you like to do?

Activity 4- If I could learn ONE thing in life it would be how to invest my money well because I could use this kind of information for the rest of my life and it would help me in the future.  To achieve my goal I will learn to spend my money only on things that I need and not things that I want.

Activity 5- Keep adding to my story… let’s see where we end up.

One dark, erie night three children were walking outside when all of a sudden …A giantic BULL comming for them. The three children ran and ran until they came up to a big house that looked kind of safe, but unusual, it had no windows at all. The three kids knocked on the door but no answer bu the bull was comming for them. They barged into the house and saw…A trail of red blood, they followed it into a a pitch black bed room, the door to the bed room slamed shut they ran to the door but it was to late the door was stuck, they lit a candle that they found and turned around and saw…a bunch of bloody fingers! One of the kids screamed. While the other stood in shock. Then one of hte kids yelled you lit a finger on fire, not a candle. The children stared to bang on the door, but it wouldnt move. They looked every where then Bob yelled “look.” Bob had fouond window. All of the kids lifted it up together. Bob looked down and saw…..a pack of mad, raging pigs from Simone’s farm! 1000 pigs were climbing up the wall, Bob started pushing them out of the room but he got bit. Bob started foaming at the mouth, and shaking like crazy. When The other kids relized is was rabies…

Activity 6- The life of people from other countries differ from mine because some people don’t even come home from school instead they may come home from working all day and others might get home and go straight to a music lesson.  So people’s lives in different countries can definetly differ from mine.

Challenge 3

Activity 1. Watch video and write post about your digital footprint Watch this video, thinking about what might be included on your digital dossier or digital footprint.

  • What sites have you joined on the internet?
  • How much information did you give them when you joined?
  • Have you filled in more than the *asterisk questions?

Google your name or nickname but include your town as well.

  • What did you find?
  • Are you on the web for sports teams, named in newspapers and where else?
  • How many cookies or footprints are you

Activity 2. Create commenting guidelines page or text box for your blog This is especially needed in a class blog. Commenting is one part of our digital footprint, so it is important students know how to comment in an appropriate way.

Activity 4. What type of user are you on the web? Check out the infographic from Bloomberg Business Week in 2007. Write a post telling your readers about the type of person you are. Are you a mixture of more than one? Which one are your parents or grandparents? Perhaps question some people in each age group and see how they compare with the results in the infographic. Do you think the statistics may have changed over the four years since the infographic was created?

Activity 5. What is digital citizenship? Play this game about digital citizenship. How well did you go? Write a post telling your readers about digital citizenship – what you should do rather than what you shouldn’t do. Maybe you would prefer to create a book, poster or video about digital citizenship. Some web2.0 tools you might use with parental or teacher permission glogster, goanimate, audioboo or flipbook.

Activity 6. Visit other student or class blogs What are some of the different web 2.0 tools being used on those blogs. Are some of the tools in posts or as widgets? Look at the sidebars – are they too crowded or are they interesting because they are interactive? Do too many ‘flashy and glittery’things slow down the loading of the blog? Write a post explaining what you want your blog to be like by the end of the ten weeks. What will you include in the sidebar and why?

Activity 1- I watched the video and I saw that there is more things on my digital dossier then I thought there were.  I have a gmail account and I am involved in the student blogging challenge but I do not give  away any personal information so I am not at any risk.  Though I have filled out more than the asterisks questions but make sure I do not give away any personal information like my last name.  I do not give away my last name or any information that will give away who I am.  When I googled my name and town I found no traces of me which means I am not giving away to much about myself.

Activity 2- To see my commenting guidelines go to http://chelsea110gs.edublogs.org/guidelines-to-a-great-cooment/.

Activity 4- When I looked at the infographic I noticed I was a creator, critic and spectator because I write on my blog, I leave comments on other people’s blog and I read other people’s bogs.  I definatly think the statistics have chaned over the last four years because you are hearing more things about facebook and other social networking sites then before.

Activity 5- When I played the digital citizenship game the first time I scored 32 out of 100.  The thing I did best on was supporting Joe and helping him to tell someone what was happening.  With digital citizenship you should never post pictures of anyone on the internet without their permission and never post things that you wouldn’t want to be posted about yourself.  An easier way to put it is to be respectful to other people and yourself.

Activity 6- At the end of 10 weeks I want to have a few more widgets on my sidebar like a cluster map to show where my visitors are coming from but I don’t want to have an overload of widgets because I found when there was more widgets on a person’s sidebar it did take longer to load and sometimes it looks cluttered.

If you would like to visit the challenge blog and write a post about some of the ideas go to  http://studentchallenge.edublogs.org/2011/09/25/challenge-3-me-on-the-internet/.
