In my opinion I think the most important event in 2011 was the earthquake in Japan on March 11, 2011.  The reason I think this event was so important is because this was an event that can affect us for years to come because when the nuclear powerplant was shaken by the earthquake it leaked radioactivity which can travel through the water and be a very dangerous threat to many people.  This is also important because the earthquake completely distroyed Japan and therefore it will be very hard to get their lives back on track.
